As an update to our recent web post of 9/23/2015, we have located some very high grade outcrops near the geochemical high derived from our vegetation sampling. See photographs here, which show the obvious high grade content of green copper oxide – in this case malachite.
The one sample which could be clearly imaged by the Niton XRF shows a copper content of 22% and an iron content of 15%. It is the oxidized product of massive chalcopyrite – copper-iron-sulfide, 34.63% copper (CuFeS2). As the mineral oxidized the copper went into solution and immediately reacted with calcium carbonate (from the adjacent limestone-marble) in solution to form malachite and the iron was fixed as iron oxide when iron in acid solution was neutralized by carbonate, to form massive hematite -limonite. The small mineral bodies, which are a few inches long would be referred as “gossan” (see Liberty Star glossary), and is typical of carbonate (limestone) replacement deposits around the world. Geologic evidence suggests Hay Mountain, at least in part, is this type of deposit.
This find is exciting and meaningful because it is the largest exposure so far located, and is similar to outcrops in the Bisbee mining district 15 miles to the south.
These photographed occurrences are along fractures in brecciated limestone which has been subsequently altered to marble leaving ghost-like outlines of the breccia fragments.
My apologies to non-technical readers making sense of these technical descriptions, however, this outcropping oxidized mineral occurrence, taken with our recent work in the area, confirms increasing mineral intensity over the previous geochemical and geophysical anomalies and is direct confirmation of the type of mineralization we are dealing with. This is of course not an ore body – which requires extensive drilling, engineering and financial calculations to define. It is however, direct evidence of the type of mineralization we are dealing with. Previously we were working with indirect geochemical, geophysical geologic and geologic interpretation. This is much more direct evidence. It could lead to more direct and specific studies followed by exploration drilling. We have added new photos to our Hay Mountain Image Gallery on our website.
